Munge non-lax versions when possible

Older version of version.pm allowed various forms that
failed even the "lax" rules. The new version.pm module
conforms to the Perl 5.12 rules, so this commit adds some
munging to try to cope with some non-lax versions
strings like "1.23-alpha"
