The complete fix for intermittent t/750firebird.t failures (RT#110979)

( amalgam cherry-pick of 63af9ced2 and 2c649fafe )

It makes no sense to throw values away in case the finish() failed - they are
good regardless. Not sure what I was thinking at the time :(
