8 This variable defines the extension used for ordinary libraries.
9 For unix, it is '.a'. The '.' is included. Other possible
10 values include '.lib'.
13 This variable defines the extension used for executable files.
14 For unix it is empty. Other possible values include '.exe'.
17 This variable defines the extension used for object files.
18 For unix, it is '.o'. The '.' is included. Other possible
19 values include '.obj'.
22 This variable is set to 'true' if AFS (Andrew File System) is used
23 on the system, 'false' otherwise. It is possible to override this
24 with a hint value or command line option, but you'd better know
27 alignbytes (alignbytes.U):
28 This variable holds the number of bytes required to align a
29 double. Usual values are 2, 4 and 8.
31 ansi2knr (ansi2knr.U):
32 This variable is set if the user needs to run ansi2knr.
33 Currently, this is not supported, so we just abort.
35 aphostname (d_gethname.U):
36 Thie variable contains the command which can be used to compute the
37 host name. The command is fully qualified by its absolute path, to make
38 it safe when used by a process with super-user privileges.
40 apiversion (patchlevel.U):
41 This is a number which identifies the lowest version of perl
42 to have an API (for XS extensions) compatible with the present
43 version. For example, for 5.005_01, the apiversion should be
44 5.005, since 5.005_01 should be binary compatible with 5.005.
45 This should probably be incremented manually somehow, perhaps
46 from patchlevel.h. For now, we'll guess maintenance subversions
47 will retain binary compatibility.
50 This variable is be used internally by Configure to determine the
51 full pathname (if any) of the ar program. After Configure runs,
52 the value is reset to a plain "ar" and is not useful.
55 This variable holds the name of the directory in which the user wants
56 to put architecture-dependent public library files for $package.
57 It is most often a local directory such as /usr/local/lib.

70 architecture. It is used mainly to construct the default archlib.

110 byteorder (byteorder.U):
111 This variable holds the byte order. In the following, larger digits
112 indicate more significance. The variable byteorder is either 4321
113 on a big-endian machine, or 1234 on a little-endian, or 87654321

139 cccdlflags (dlsrc.U):
140 This variable contains any special flags that might need to be
141 passed with 'cc -c' to compile modules to be used to create a shared
142 library that will be used for dynamic loading. For hpux, this
143 should be +z. It is up to the makefile to use it.
146 This variable contains any special flags that might need to be
147 passed to cc to link with a shared library for dynamic loading.

214 This variable contains an identification of the catenation mechanism

217 cppflags (ccflags.U):
218 This variable holds the flags that will be passed to the C pre-
219 processor. It is up to the Makefile to use it.

222 This variable has the same functionality as cppminus, only it applies
223 to cpprun and not cppstdin.

226 This variable contains the second part of the string which will invoke
227 the C preprocessor on the standard input and produce to standard
228 output. This variable will have the value "-" if cppstdin needs
229 a minus to specify standard input, otherwise the value is "".
232 This variable contains the command which will invoke a C preprocessor
233 on standard input and put the output to stdout. It is guaranteed not
234 to be a wrapper and may be a null string if no preprocessor can be
235 made directly available. This preprocessor might be different from the
236 one used by the C compiler. Don't forget to append cpplast after the
237 preprocessor options.
239 cppstdin (cppstdin.U):
240 This variable contains the command which will invoke the C
241 preprocessor on standard input and put the output to stdout.
242 It is primarily used by other Configure units that ask about

245 cryptlib (d_crypt.U):
246 This variable holds -lcrypt or the path to a libcrypt.a archive if
247 the crypt() function is not defined in the standard C library. It is
