8 This variable is be used internally by Configure to determine the
9 full pathname (if any) of the Mcc program. After Configure runs,
10 the value is reset to a plain "Mcc" and is not useful.
13 This variable defines the extension used for ordinary libraries.
14 For unix, it is '.a'. The '.' is included. Other possible
15 values include '.lib'.
18 This variable defines the extension used for executable files.
19 For unix it is empty. Other possible values include '.exe'.
22 This variable defines the extension used for object files.
23 For unix, it is '.o'. The '.' is included. Other possible
24 values include '.obj'.
27 This variable is set to 'true' if AFS (Andrew File System) is used
28 on the system, 'false' otherwise. It is possible to override this
29 with a hint value or command line option, but you'd better know
32 alignbytes (alignbytes.U):
33 This variable holds the number of bytes required to align a
34 double. Usual values are 2, 4 and 8.
36 ansi2knr (ansi2knr.U):
37 This variable is set if the user needs to run ansi2knr.
38 Currently, this is not supported, so we just abort.
40 aphostname (d_gethname.U):
41 This variable contains the command which can be used to compute the
42 host name. The command is fully qualified by its absolute path, to make
43 it safe when used by a process with super-user privileges.
45 apiversion (patchlevel.U):
46 This is a number which identifies the lowest version of perl
47 to have an API (for XS extensions) compatible with the present
48 version. For example, for 5.005_01, the apiversion should be
49 5.005, since 5.005_01 should be binary compatible with 5.005.
50 This should probably be incremented manually somehow, perhaps
51 from patchlevel.h. For now, we'll guess maintenance subversions
52 will retain binary compatibility.
55 This variable is be used internally by Configure to determine the

60 This variable holds the name of the directory in which the user wants
61 to put architecture-dependent public library files for $package.
62 It is most often a local directory such as /usr/local/lib.

115 byteorder (byteorder.U):
116 This variable holds the byte order. In the following, larger digits
117 indicate more significance. The variable byteorder is either 4321
118 on a big-endian machine, or 1234 on a little-endian, or 87654321

122 This variable contains the \c string if that is what causes the echo

145 This variable contains any special flags that might need to be
146 passed with 'cc -c' to compile modules to be used to create a shared
147 library that will be used for dynamic loading. For hpux, this
148 should be +z. It is up to the makefile to use it.
151 This variable contains any special flags that might need to be
152 passed to cc to link with a shared library for dynamic loading.

225 This variable contains an identification of the catenation mechanism

228 cppccsymbols (Cppsym.U):
229 The variable contains the symbols defined by the C compiler when
230 when it calls cpp. The symbols defined by the cc alone or cpp
231 alone are not in this list, see ccsymbols and cppsymbols.
232 The list is a space-separated list of symbol=value tokens.

235 This variable holds the flags that will be passed to the C pre-
236 processor. It is up to the Makefile to use it.
238 cpplast (cppstdin.U):
239 This variable has the same functionality as cppminus, only it applies
240 to cpprun and not cppstdin.

243 This variable contains the second part of the string which will invoke
244 the C preprocessor on the standard input and produce to standard
245 output. This variable will have the value "-" if cppstdin needs
246 a minus to specify standard input, otherwise the value is "".
249 This variable contains the command which will invoke a C preprocessor
250 on standard input and put the output to stdout. It is guaranteed not
251 to be a wrapper and may be a null string if no preprocessor can be
252 made directly available. This preprocessor might be different from the
253 one used by the C compiler. Don't forget to append cpplast after the
254 preprocessor options.
256 cppstdin (cppstdin.U):
257 This variable contains the command which will invoke the C
258 preprocessor on standard input and put the output to stdout.
