17=head1 DESCRIPTION
18
19This document aims to record the Perl source code releases.
20
21=head1 INTRODUCTION
22
23Perl history in brief, by Larry Wall:
24
a3cb178b 25 Perl 0 introduced Perl to my officemates.
26 Perl 1 introduced Perl to the world, and changed /\(...\|...\)/ to
d516a115 27 /(...|...)/. \(Dan Faigin still hasn't forgiven me. :-\)
cac726e9 28 Perl 2 introduced Henry Spencer's regular expression package.
29 Perl 3 introduced the ability to handle binary data (embedded nulls).
30 Perl 4 introduced the first Camel book. Really. We mostly just
d516a115 31 switched version numbers so the book could refer to 4.000.
cac726e9 32 Perl 5 introduced everything else, including the ability to
d516a115 33 introduce everything else.

35=head1 THE KEEPERS OF THE PUMPKIN
36
7b8d334a 37Larry Wall, Andy Dougherty, Tom Christiansen, Charles Bailey, Nick
193fb0af 38Ing-Simmons, Chip Salzenberg, Tim Bunce, Malcolm Beattie, Gurusamy
eea97dc2 39Sarathy, Graham Barr.

41=head2 PUMPKIN?
42
43[from Porting/pumpkin.pod in the Perl source code distribution]
44
45Chip Salzenberg gets credit for that, with a nod to his cow orker,
46David Croy. We had passed around various names (baton, token, hot
47potato) but none caught on. Then, Chip asked:
48
49[begin quote]
50
51 Who has the patch pumpkin?
52
53To explain: David Croy once told me once that at a previous job,
54there was one tape drive and multiple systems that used it for backups.
55But instead of some high-tech exclusion software, they used a low-tech
56method to prevent multiple simultaneous backups: a stuffed pumpkin.
57No one was allowed to make backups unless they had the "backup pumpkin".
58
59[end quote]
60
61The name has stuck. The holder of the pumpkin is sometimes called
193fb0af 62the pumpking (keeping the source afloat?) or the pumpkineer (pulling
63the strings?).

486added lines for 110 kilobytes, it removed lines for 19 kilobytes, and
