38values that can be loaded: an integer value (IV), an unsigned integer
39value (UV), a double (NV), a string (PV), and another scalar (SV).

245Perl provides the function C<sv_chop> to efficiently remove characters
246from the beginning of a string; you give it an SV and a pointer to
da75cd15 247somewhere inside the PV, and it discards everything before the
94dde4fb 248pointer. The efficiency comes by means of a little hack: instead of
249actually removing the characters, C<sv_chop> sets the flag C<OOK>
250(offset OK) to signal to other functions that the offset hack is in
251effect, and it puts the number of bytes chopped off into the IV field
252of the SV. It then moves the PV pointer (called C<SvPVX>) forward that

2288In the olden, less enlightened times, we all used to use ASCII. Most of
2289us did, anyway. The big problem with ASCII is that it's American. Well,
2290no, that's not actually the problem; the problem is that it's not
2291particularly useful for people who don't use the Roman alphabet. What
2292used to happen was that particular languages would stick their own
2293alphabet in the upper range of the sequence, between 128 and 255. Of
2294course, we then ended up with plenty of variants that weren't quite
2295ASCII, and the whole point of it being a standard was lost.

2297Worse still, if you've got a language like Chinese or
2298Japanese that has hundreds or thousands of characters, then you really
2299can't fit them into a mere 256, so they had to forget about ASCII
2300altogether, and build their own systems using pairs of numbers to refer
2301to one character.

2303To fix this, some people formed Unicode, Inc. and
2304produced a new character set containing all the characters you can
2305possibly think of and more. There are several ways of representing these

2313non-UTF-8 data. The Unicode character 200, (C<0xC8> for you hex types)

2315C<v196.172>. Unfortunately, the non-Unicode string C<chr(196).chr(172)>
2316has that byte sequence as well. So you can't tell just by looking - this
2317is what makes Unicode input an interesting problem.

2495optimizations through the creation of "macro-ops" (ops which perform the
2496functions of multiple ops which are usually executed together, such as
b7cb320d 2497C<gvsv, gvsv, add>.)

b455bf3f 2499This feature is implemented as a new op type, C<OP_CUSTOM>. The Perl
53e06cf0 2500core does not "know" anything special about this op type, and so it will
2501not be involved in any optimizations. This also means that you can
2502define your custom ops to be any op structure - unary, binary, list and
2503so on - you like.

2505It's important to know what custom operators won't do for you. They
2506won't let you add new syntax to Perl, directly. They won't even let you
2507add new keywords, directly. In fact, they won't change the way Perl
2508compiles a program at all. You have to do those changes yourself, after
2509Perl has compiled the program. You do this either by manipulating the op
2510tree using a C<CHECK> block and the C<B::Generate> module, or by adding
2511a custom peephole optimizer with the C<optimize> module.

2513When you do this, you replace ordinary Perl ops with custom ops by
2514creating ops with the type C<OP_CUSTOM> and the C<pp_addr> of your own
2515PP function. This should be defined in XS code, and should look like
2516the PP ops in C<pp_*.c>. You are responsible for ensuring that your op
2517takes the appropriate number of values from the stack, and you are
2518responsible for adding stack marks if necessary.

2520You should also "register" your op with the Perl interpreter so that it
2521can produce sensible error and warning messages. Since it is possible to
2522have multiple custom ops within the one "logical" op type C<OP_CUSTOM>,
2523Perl uses the value of C<< o->op_ppaddr >> as a key into the
2524C<PL_custom_op_descs> and C<PL_custom_op_names> hashes. This means you
2525need to enter a name and description for your op at the appropriate
2526place in the C<PL_custom_op_names> and C<PL_custom_op_descs> hashes.
