d7418ba7 1This file contains a description of all the shell variables whose value is
2determined by the Configure script. Variables intended for use in C
ebc74a4b 3programs (e.g. I_UNISTD) are already described in config_h.SH. [`configpm'
4generates pod documentation for Config.pm from this file--please try to keep
5the formatting regular.]
d7418ba7 6
781b178c 7_a (Unix.U):
8 This variable defines the extension used for ordinary libraries.
9 For unix, it is '.a'. The '.' is included. Other possible
10 values include '.lib'.
11
12_exe (Unix.U):
13 This variable defines the extension used for executable files.
14 For unix it is empty. Other possible values include '.exe'.
15
16_o (Unix.U):
17 This variable defines the extension used for object files.
18 For unix, it is '.o'. The '.' is included. Other possible
19 values include '.obj'.
20
21afs (afs.U):
22 This variable is set to 'true' if AFS (Andrew File System) is used
23 on the system, 'false' otherwise. It is possible to override this
24 with a hint value or command line option, but you'd better know
25 what you are doing.
26
27alignbytes (alignbytes.U):
28 This variable holds the number of bytes required to align a
29 double. Usual values are 2, 4 and 8.
30
31ansi2knr (ansi2knr.U):
32 This variable is set if the user needs to run ansi2knr.
33 Currently, this is not supported, so we just abort.
34
35aphostname (d_gethname.U):
36 This variable contains the command which can be used to compute the
37 host name. The command is fully qualified by its absolute path, to make
38 it safe when used by a process with super-user privileges.
39
ff935051 40api_revision (patchlevel.U):
41 The three variables, api_revision, api_version, and
42 api_subversion, specify the version of the oldest perl binary
43 compatible with the present perl. In a full version string
44 such as '5.6.1', api_revision is the '5'.
45 Prior to 5.5.640, the format was a floating point number,
46 like 5.00563.
47 perl.c:incpush() and lib/lib.pm will automatically search in
48 $sitelib/.. for older directories back to the limit specified
49 by these api_ variables. This is only useful if you have a
50 perl library directory tree structured like the default one.
51 See INSTALL for how this works. The versioned site_perl
52 directory was introduced in 5.005, so that is the lowest
53 possible value. The version list appropriate for the current
54 system is determined in inc_version_list.U.
55 XXX To do: Since compatibility can depend on compile time
56 options (such as bincompat, longlong, etc.) it should
57 (perhaps) be set by Configure, but currently it isn't.
58 Currently, we read a hard-wired value from patchlevel.h.
59 Perhaps what we ought to do is take the hard-wired value from
60 patchlevel.h but then modify it if the current Configure
61 options warrant. patchlevel.h then would use an #ifdef guard.
62
63api_subversion (patchlevel.U):
64 The three variables, api_revision, api_version, and
65 api_subversion, specify the version of the oldest perl binary
66 compatible with the present perl. In a full version string
67 such as '5.6.1', api_subversion is the '1'. See api_revision for
68 full details.
69
70api_version (patchlevel.U):
71 The three variables, api_revision, api_version, and
72 api_subversion, specify the version of the oldest perl binary
73 compatible with the present perl. In a full version string
74 such as '5.6.1', api_version is the '6'. See api_revision for
75 full details. As a special case, 5.5.0 is rendered in the
76 old-style as 5.005. (In the 5.005_0x maintenance series,
77 this was the only versioned directory in $sitelib.)
78
79api_versionstring (patchlevel.U):
80 This variable combines api_revision, api_version, and
81 api_subversion in a format such as 5.6.1 (or 5_6_1) suitable
82 for use as a directory name. This is filesystem dependent.

90 This variable holds the name of the directory in which the user wants
91 to put architecture-dependent public library files for $package.
92 It is most often a local directory such as /usr/local/lib.
93 Programs using this variable must be prepared to deal
94 with filename expansion.
95
96archlibexp (archlib.U):
97 This variable is the same as the archlib variable, but is
98 filename expanded at configuration time, for convenient use.
99

106
107archobjs (Unix.U):
108 This variable defines any additional objects that must be linked
109 in with the program on this architecture. On unix, it is usually
110 empty. It is typically used to include emulations of unix calls
111 or other facilities. For perl on OS/2, for example, this would
112 include os2/os2.obj.
113
114awk (Loc.U):
5bf26616 115 This variable is used internally by Configure to determine the
781b178c 116 full pathname (if any) of the awk program. After Configure runs,

2128 search when adding directories to @INC. This is only useful
2129 if you have a perl library directory tree structured like the
2130 default one. See INSTALL for how this works. The versioned
2131 site_perl directory was introduced in 5.005, so that is the

2157 portability, you should only use this variable within your makefiles.
2158
2159installman3dir (man3dir.U):
2160 This variable is really the same as man3direxp, unless you are using
2161 AFS in which case it points to the read/write location whereas

2164
2165installprefix (installprefix.U):
2166 This variable holds the name of the directory below which
2167 "make install" will install the package. For most users, this
2168 is the same as prefix. However, it is useful for

2202installstyle (installstyle.U):
2203 This variable describes the "style" of the perl installation.
2204 This is intended to be useful for tools that need to
2205 manipulate entire perl distributions. Perl itself doesn't use
2206 this to find its libraries -- the library directories are
2207 stored directly in Config.pm. Currently, there are only two
2208 styles: "lib" and "lib/perl5". The default library locations
2209 (e.g. privlib, sitelib) are either $prefix/lib or
2210 $prefix/lib/perl5. The former is useful if $prefix is a
2211 directory dedicated to perl (e.g. /opt/perl), while the latter
2212 is useful if $prefix is shared by many packages, e.g. if
2213 $prefix=/usr/local.
2214 This may later be extended to include other information, so
2215 be careful with pattern-matching on the results.
2216 For compatibility with perl5.005 and earlier, the default
2217 setting is based on whether or not $prefix contains the string
2218 "perl".

2558 archive library. Currently, this is only used by Linux, where
2559 nm --dynamic is *required* to get symbols from an ELF library which
2560 has been stripped, but nm --dynamic is *fatal* on an archive library.
2561 Maybe Linux should just always set usenm=false.
2562
2563nonxs_ext (Extensions.U):
2564 This variable holds a list of all non-xs extensions included
2565 in the package. All of them will be built.

2612 setting defaults. It is set to '' if we can't figure it out.
2613 We try to be flexible about how much of the version number
2614 to keep, e.g. if 4.1.1, 4.1.2, and 4.1.3 are essentially the
2615 same for this package, hints files might just be os_4.0 or
2616 os_4.1, etc., not keeping separate files for each little release.

2841 If the user builds a shared libperl.so, then we need to tell the
2842 'perl' executable where it will be able to find the installed libperl.so.
2843 One way to do this on some systems is to set the environment variable
2844 LD_RUN_PATH to the directory that will be the final location of the
2845 shared libperl.so. The makefile can use this with something like
2846 $shrpenv $(CC) -o perl perlmain.o $libperl $libs
2847 Typical values are
2848 shrpenv="env LD_RUN_PATH=$archlibexp/CORE"
2849 or
2850 shrpenv=''
2851 See the main perl Makefile.SH for actual working usage.
2852 Alternatively, we might be able to use a command line option such

2926 this directory while performing installation (with ~ substitution).
f868067f 2927 The standard distribution will put nothing in this directory.
2928 After perl has been installed, users may install their own local
2929 architecture-independent modules in this directory with
2930 MakeMaker Makefile.PL
2931 or equivalent. See INSTALL for details.
